Updates

6/10/2025

I am saddened by the news of the passing of Miss Canada 1989, Juliette Powell. A media expert, university instructor, and respected television host, she was also the first non-white Miss Canada, and only the third Black woman to have ever placed at the Miss Canada Pageant. Juliette was also one of the youngest winners at age 18.

Care and light to her loved ones.

Spring 2025
I have very little recent news on these former winners. All leads are appreciated:

Marion Saver (1946)
Betty Jean Ferguson (1948)
Margaret Munn (1949)

Kathy Archibald (1953)

Joan Fitzpatrick (1958)

Linda Douma (1965)

Marie-France Beaulieu (1969)

Carol Commisso (1971)

Donna Sawicky (1972)

Yvonne Foster (1977)

Heidi Quiring (1979)

Jodi Rutledge (1983)

Karen Tilley (1985)

To date, I have interviewed winners or family members of nearly half of Miss Canada's 46 winners. In addition, many past participants, regional directors, staff members, and others involved with the event have shared their stories.

I am looking to continue these interviews, including with those who may have had a "perfect" time and those who may not have had an "ideal" experience. All stories are valued and welcome.

If you or a loved one was involved, please be in touch! Send me an email (misscanadabook@gmail.com) or write me via the Contact page, linked on the menu above.

The website and social media for The Fairest Girl in Canada are launched, following several months of preparation on the book.

With the recent passing of Patti Falconer (longtime coordinator of Miss Calgary and other regional events, in addition to her titular modeling agency), the need to gather stories and narratives about these events becomes even more pressing.

Check out the Facebook and Instagram pages for historical pictures, stories, anecdotes, and more, some of which may make it into the book.
